#51 Oreca Chrysler Viper GTS-R GT2 '99

162 wins. (out of 445 races)

History

In the early 1990s, Dodge Vipers were being used by privateers to test the V10’s potential on the track. Unfortunately, these would-be race cars were roadsters, and the teams that fielded them were too short of cash to fix these problems. However, Dodge was already in development of a coupe version in 1995, called the Viper GTS. Also, Viper sales were struggling in Europe, and sending it to Le Mans would boost sales. In that case, Chrysler allowed Dodge to start up a racing program. Since Dodge would be racing on both American and European circuits, they decided to ask Oreca with some help building the car. After 57 cars were built, Dodge ran 2 teams with 2 cars each at the 1996 24 Hours of Le Mans, scoring a top position of 10th. The following year, Dodge switched the Viper to the GT2 class, due to the Mercedes CLK LM and Porsche 911 GT1-98 being too much for the Viper. However, the Viper once again lost, this time losing to the Porsche 911 GT2s. In 1998 however, the #53 Viper took 1st at Le Mans, with the #51 car taking 2nd. In its final year at Le Mans in 1999, the #51 car took 1st, in its final race in the LMGTS category. To celebrate this victory, a special Viper was made. The GTS-R would go on to race until 2005, when it was phased out by the Viper Competition Coupe. The #51 car is now in the hands of a private collector.
