NAME: Toyota Supra GT500 Race Car
PICTURES:
as Toyota’s most iconic race car, I figure that I should do it justice by giving it a pretty well fleshed out story of its racing career
at the time the Supra GT500 race car was being introduced, the GT500 class was only just being established, with the previous GT1 and GT2 classes being phased out, but the wide variety of teams and cars would fortunately be able to adapt and stay
now obviously, the greatest rival that the Supra would have was the Skyline GT-R made by rival company Nissan, but Toyota had a few tricks up their imaginary sleeves
the rules had stated that manufacturers could use any engine that they had made themselves, so they simply reused the 3S-GT from their Celica rally cars (which had also dominated rally for a few years, and was also the subject of their infamous turbo cheat), and slapped it into the supra, and it was good for around 480 horsepower, and the engine was also light
the Supra had great potential, but it took a while for it to stretch itself out, and 1997 would be the year where it would finally get its time to shine
now there were many different GT500 Supras on the field, but I think it should be obvious that we’re covering the #36 car here, because this would be the car that would take home the titles for the GT500 driver’s championship, and the teams’ championship
the car got off with a rough start at Suzuka, but would quickly take a respectable third place at Fuji; now obviously the #36 car was already at a point disadvantage when compared to the #39 car, but the Fuji result would turn out to be the one thing that was necessary for the championship title
the #36 car would get very good results for the next three races, and it all ended up on a tie with the #39 car ironically enough, but the silver lining was that the third place podium finish at Fuji was enough to give the driver’s title to drivers Pedro de la Rosa and Micheal Krumm, giving the team the championship titles that they wanted
I think that’s all that I can say, time for specs (these were somewhat hard to find, so they aren’t gonna be fully accurate):
this car is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 engine
this car is mated to a 6-speed sequential gearbox
this car does 0-60 mph in around 3.8 seconds (rough estimate, 0-60 times aren’t very easy to find on race cars)
