It was an incident that happened in September 1944 when 9 pilots (Bush being one of them) had their planes shot down when attempting to attack Chichijima Island which had a radio tower built there. Bush was the only survivor whereas the other 8 pilots were tortured and then eaten by the Japanese. Bush surprisingly remembered the incident.

They did have a planned invasion of it called Operation Sealion in September 1940 but it never happened and as a result the battles over the UK were restricted to dogfights.
