Random steering angle comparison

while being frustrated about how the Porsche Mission R kept on understeering, I had a bit of a realization as to why it was understeering, and I think I’ve found what I can attribute it to, which you may have seen in the title

the steering angles of each car are obviously different, but it creates an issue with how this game deals with handling (at least from what I know), and that it does not allow tires to extract the most grip out of the handling stat that has been assigned to them

so to use an example, I’ve gotten a Maserati MCXtrema here, one of the most egregious examples of poor handling ingame that I’ve seen

here is the steering from a stand still:

as expected, it turns relatively well with this high steering angle at around 30-50 km/h, albeit a bit floaty

now here’s at around 100 km/h, keep in mind that jumping out of a car preserves the steering input and angle, so all these images should be fairly accurate

as you can see, the steering angle is significantly decreased compared to the stand still example I’ve shown above, and it only gets exacerbated at higher speeds, and I’ll show you an example at its top speed (341 km/h)

while this is somewhat expected at such a high speed, considering you don’t exactly turn 20 degrees while at 300 km/h, the difference between the 100 km/h test and 300 km/h test is shockingly low, and it’s clear it probably isn’t properly balanced in a linear fashion, as you should be able to get some more steering angle out of this

I will show an example with the best handling car ingame, the Revenni B-127

0 km/h:

100 km/h:

top speed:

as you can see, the steering angles at all speeds seem reasonable, with the stand still having a very large angle, 100 km/h having a reasonably reduced steering angle, and top speed having very little angle

now, I will show off one of the most blatantly overpowered cars ingame, the Ferrari F80, which appears to have not been particularly well nerfed as it is still very overpowered from what I’ve seen

0 km/h:

100 km/h:

top speed (400 km/h):

looking at these images, the steering angles are comparable to the B-127, but if you look at how much handling the F80 has, at a very respectable 18.3 stock, and 18.8 maxed, there’s no wonder as to why it can corner so well at high speeds, as there is just enough angle to extract the perfect amount of handling and make it past high speed highway turns, and if you look back at the MCXtrema, you can clearly see why it handles so poorly compared to the F80, despite having a higher handling stat

now for a car with an infamously low amount of handling despite what the stat may say, the Lamborghini V12 Vision GT

0 km/h:

100 km/h:

top speed (500 km/h):

yikes, you can see why it handles so poorly at higher speeds, the angle while it should be low at higher speeds, it feels unreasonably low to be turning likely a fraction of a degree here, and you can hardly see any sort of steering here

there is one large asterisk here though, and it is that because I have removed the fenders on all the cars that have fenders, this may not be fully accurate as these fenders may inhibit worse handling due to certain jank, and this may be most noticable on the Lambo VGT, as it has a tendency to get parts damaged in such a way that it blocks certain inputs

now this is not a very in-depth analysis on how steering angle affects cars (as a matter of fact, it is very far from in-depth if there’s only 4 cars for comparison here, all of which being high-performance racecars), but this may explain how handling values can feel very arbitrary, as steering angle is something that very many people overlook

one final thing to state, I have purposefully left out lower end vehicles for this comparison, as the speeds are too low to extract any sort of meaningful information in my opinion, you can feel free to experiment yourself, but I didn’t find it valuable enough to include here

that’s all from me here, I may update this with new cars if necessary, but I think I have made my point rather clear here, I hope this can garner enough traction to get the attention of some people that can fix this

another thing i would like to mention about poor handling
so you guys know how a car likes to have sticky steering?
i have come to the realization this happens due to backheavy cars, and it is notoriously bad on the 911 GT3 RS and 911 RSR (both rear-engined cars) and CLK GTR, Saleen S7, and F1 GTR Longtail (all large rear overhang cars). This is probably due to the fact the weight acts as a kind of counterbalance, so when you make a turn it swings with it, and when you exit the turn it swings back, swinging the car with it
the honda race mower is a prime example too - since most of its weight is based in the back, whenever you steer it, it fights back against you. However, when you remove the rear overhang, it turns amazingly well, albeit with a loss of speed when turning (like the Alfa Romeo 155 DTM V6)
therefore the solution to these sticky steering problems is just to have the devs remove the weight of the cars at the rear as it causes these issues

that’s how the BMW M1 Procar had such great handling but tended to veer off after turns- there was a slight overhang with the rear, which caused it to have weird handling characteristics at high speed
The CLK GTR and F1 GTR all handle well at low speeds, but combined with the steering angle at high speeds like Cosmo mentioned, and the large overhang contribute to both a stiff feeling car and one that seems to have a mind of its own after turns

Basically u need an f1 or a good car for better steering in races

As Alan mentioned
The center of mass also greatly affects the handling of vehicles, at mid to high speeds.
And i also felt that my character affects the balance as well, CC2s vehicle weight distribution does not account for it’s consequences at all

Can a character like that be considered as an advantage?

I WAS RIGHT

made this unusable car actually usable
see it’s the rear overhang that causes sticky steering

If you’re driving a crane yes
