History:
The Merkava Mark 1 is the first generation of the Merkava main battle tank, designed and produced for the Israel Defense Forces. Development began in 1970, with the first Mk.1 tanks entering service in 1979. The Merkava Mk. 1 saw its first major combat deployment during the 1982 Lebanon War. Between 1979 and 1983 only 250 Merkava MK1 were ever built.
