Citroen Xsara Kit Car

Citroen Xsara Kit Car
One of the best motorsport stories to tell in my own opinion ( suprised it wasnt suggested before, but ight)

The Xsara before the WRC one was an interesting topic among rally fans when it raced from 1998-2001, the fwd monster powered by a 2L inline 4 with an active differential. Under Formula two Kit Car regulations (2-wheel driven and 2 litres of displacement but unrestricted engine modifications), the car had a controversial rise to fame, first starting with the French rally championship, where it debuted first and fifth, leading to the championship going to Citroen and Bugaski later that year by winning 6 out of 10 rallies. With the following season in 1999 doing even better, winning 9 of 10 rallies. Even in Spain, where the car entered in the same category but under the Spanish championship and dominated for 3 straight years… it also helped a young Sebsebian Loeb win the French championship in 2001, which allowed him to be promoted to the main WRC team and the rest is history. But back to it car history, after its success in the F2 regulations, Citroen thought it was a good idea to enter the car into the main WRC category in the European championship, still under the Lower F2 regulations, where it raced against the iconic Group A category cars ( you know, cars like the evo and wrx where in). And well, the car was decent on the dirt and off-road sections of the rallies, and it faired decently against its competition; however, during the dry asphalt rallies the car was as competitive as the higher Group A regulation cars, the lower weight and wider Xsara kit car compared to the Group A cars allowed the fwd and 20 bhp cars to be just as good as the 4wd cars and more powerful, allowing it to win 2 rallies overrall back to back in 1999 (in France and in Spain), even edging out Richard Burns in the Impreza WRX and Makkinen in the Mitsubishi Evo 6. These wins allowed Bugalski to finish 7th in the driver’s championship, right below McRae. The success of the Xsara alongside its French brother, the Pugeot 306 maxi, provoked many complaints from the official WRC teams, as a result, the FIA decided to put some restrictions to reduce their “competitiveness” in 2000 by increasing the minimum weight and limiting the power which killed the Kit car… but Citroen was already planning a 4wd version of the Xsara, which is a completely different story for next time ( it was too good…)

Alright enough yapping
