1955 Porsche 550 RS Spyder (chassis 550-0031)

NAME: Porsche 550 RS Spyder

PICTURES:

the 550 Spyder was built as a purpose made race car, being inspired by the 356 that was made in years past, but this would be built with a lot more finesse, and the project went forward with the 547 engine and 550 chassis

now these cars would be very successful, getting a class victory at Le Mans, and getting consistent podium finishes and other victories, but while all that is very impressive, with the oddly specific chassis code in the title, you can see where this is going

now Michael May had gotten this 550 Spyder from another driver, Walter Ringgenberg, who had not really seen much success with the car, and Michael May would receive the car to modify and do whatever he wanted to race with it

May would modify the car to have a rather crazy looking wing on it, but the wing proved to produce effective downforce, as it would outqualify all of the works Porsches at the 1956 Nürburgring by four seconds, where the wing would be banned as to not overshadow the works Porsches

the car would end up retiring due to mechanical issues like it had in past races, but it is still an interesting look at old Porsche race cars, especially with this chassis being one of the first cars to experiment with a wing to produce downforce

as a small little tidbit, the 550 RS Spyder is well known for James Dean’s fatal crash in one of these, as he simply could not handle the performance of this car

Double purposes on the spoiler

Spoiler gives nice shade

so ig the spoiler is multi-purpose
(speed stuff and covering)

i think this was in a video

dunno the name but it was some dude testing in 71’ nurburgring about classic race cars with modern spoilers to see if they go faster

it’s funny how you’re all talking about the spoiler giving some shade to the driver, but you literally had to tilt the spoiler so you could enter the car since it was low enough to have head clearance issues
